The Jacobean Singers are looking forward to performing Mozart's famous final and unfinished Requiem in D minor, along with a selection of beautiful Rutter favourites on Sunday 15th October at 3PM in St Augustine’s Balmain

The Jacobean Singers are delighted to be presenting Mozart’s Requiem, a world-wide hit in classical music, placing a solid 6th in ABC’s Classic 100 listeners’ awards in the heart of Balmain in mid-October.

“The piece is known for its exquisite solos and intricate harmonies, but also for the story of its creation” says Bradley Kalgovas, a long-time member of the choir.

Lara Barazi-Clingan is looking forward to directing the work on Saturday 15th October 2016 at 3:00 pm, St. Augustine's Catholic Church on Eaton Street- right in the heart of Balmain. She is excited that “…it is a great time for families to come together and experience some truly heavenly music”.

The work was commissioned by a wealthy nobleman, Count Walsegg, in July 1791. The Count wanted this kept secret and was intending to pass the work off as his own composition in memory of his recently deceased wife. Mozart was given a substantial advance and there was to be a further fee on completion of the score.

“However, Mozart became unwell and his wife Constanze, knowing that he was about to die a pauper, needed the complete fee, so convinced his pupil Sussmayer to finish the piece. Moreover, the fact she wanted to get hold of the complete fee intrigues me” says Amanda Muir, one of the notable soloists in this performance.

The work will be performed along with several works from John Rutter which are well-known to many for their lovely melodies and choruses.

“The Jacobeans have a long history of performing classical choral works for more than 20 years and are looking forward to welcoming people of all ages to the concert” notes the president of the choir, Allan Redpath.

Mozart’s pupil Franz Sussmayer eventually completed the work, matching his hand writing to that of Mozart so that Constanze would receive the fee. The amount completed by Sussmayer is still unknown today.
