The Teusner Story

The Teusner story begins in 2001 when Kym was a party to a conversation between 5th generation grape grower Steve Riebke and his brother Leon. They were lamenting over the fact that their 90 year old Grenache vineyard was due for destruction due to the low grape prices being paid by the big companies.

Kym Teusner & Michael Page hatched a plan, scratched together some money, a vineyard was saved and a winery was born with the first release of Teusner Joshua in 2002.

Today, Teusner still focuses on the ancient vines which make the Barossa so unique. Vineyards up to 130 years of age are sourced from across the Barossa....from Williamstown in the South to Ebenezer in the North..... Greenock in the West to Vine Vale in the East....taking full advantage of the diverse range of terroirs the Barossa has to offer.

After finishing his wine-making studies at the University of Adelaide, Kym Teusner spent time working at several high profile Barossa wineries and completing vintages in France’s Rhone Valley before the desire to create his own wines lead him to form Teusner.

Teusner quickly built a reputation for exceptional, affordable wines culminating in Teusner winning the Gourmet Traveller/Kemenys Young Wine-Maker of the Year in 2007, Most successful exhibitor at the Barossa Wine Show in 2010, runner up for Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2011 and Vintage Cellars Winemaker of the year in 2017. The range of Teusner wines continue to gather rave reviews in both the local and international wine press.

“We’ve always insisted on treating our grape growers like the real people they are, and not just suppliers. I reckon it’s why we’ve been able get fruit from some of best of the old Barossa vineyards. We invite them into the winery for a beer and to taste wines made from the old vine fruit their family has grown for generations. We pay them well because not only do they work hard but they’re extremely good at what they do as you’d expect from people that have been growing grapes for so many years. In return, they stick by us and grow amazing fruit…so we can make righteous wines. It pays to look after each other!” says Kym.

Since the first vintage in 2002, the philosophy at Teusner has remained the same .....source old vine fruit from some of the Barossa’s finest vineyards, gentle handling in the cellar and judicious old oak use to let the fruit speak of its origins and a finished wine that is expressive, authentic and affordable wines that we want to drink at home with our family and friends.... tenets that will never change.
